If you've never used a sewing machine (or it's been a long time and you don't remember how), now is the perfect time to get started. At Studio Costura, I offer several beginner courses that take you from learning how to thread a sewing machine to creating projects with beautiful seam finishes. Keep reading to learn more about what each course covers.
Beginner's Course I
In the first beginner's course, you'll learn how to thread the machine and sew basic stitches by first creating a swatch piece with different seam finishes. We'll leave out everything that isn't essential (there will be time later to learn what each part of the machine does) and focus on sewing in a straight line… or as straight as possible—it all comes with practice.
Then we’ll use Laola’s Mini Pouch pattern to create your first sewing project: a reversible pouch. In four hours, you’ll learn tons of tips, feel confident using the machine, and take home a little bag you made yourself.
The price for the Beginner I course is €65 (includes all materials). The course lasts 4 hours. You can check availability in the groups and reserve your spot by emailing hola@studiocostura.com.
Beginner Course II
In the second course of the beginner series, you’ll learn about fabrics and how to cut pattern pieces correctly. Building on the foundation you gained in Beginner Course I, we’ll continue to learn slightly more complex techniques.
The course project is a zipper pouch with a lining —a piece that’s just as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside. You’ll learn plenty of tips that will make sewing a joy.
The price for the Beginner Course II is €65 (includes all materials). The course lasts 4 hours. You can check availability in the groups and reserve your spot by emailing hola@studiocostura.com.
Beginner's Course III
In the third course of the beginner's series, we'll start with clothing. After practicing with accessories, it's time to make a garment tailored to your measurements so you can experience the true power of sewing: the freedom to create any garment you like!
The class project is a pair of shorts with elasticated waist that can serve as both summer pants and pajamas. You’ll learn which types of fabrics work well for starting to sew your own clothes and which fabrics you should save for later to avoid frustration.
The course includes a multi-size pants pattern that you can use again at home to sew as many versions as you like.
The price for the Beginner III course is €80 (includes all materials; you can choose from different fabrics for your shorts). The course lasts 4 hours. You can check availability in the groups and reserve your spot by emailing hola@studiocostura.com.
You’re welcome at my school to get started on your sewing journey. At my studio, you’ll use professional sewing machines with speed control that make starting out very easy—there’s no need to be afraid of that first contact with the machine. I’ve taught hundreds of people with no previous experience how to use a sewing machine, and I’ll guide you with a very clear method that highlights the key points so you can achieve great results from the very beginning. I promise it’s much more rewarding than you might think, so go ahead and give it a try!
If you’d like to give this course as a gift to someone else, you can get a gift card and he/she can pick ou the date for the course later on. If you are a group of three students, feel free to write me as well — I may be able to offer additional booking options beyond the dates listed on the website.
Some reviews about the beginners course:
“Cannot recommend this little atelier enough! I went in as a sewing novice with barely nimble enough fingers to tie my own shoe— I left as a sewing novice with clumsy fingers but a strong, hands-on understanding of how to prepare a sewing machine and sometimes zig zag stitch in a straight line! 😂 Karu is a fantastic teacher; patient, methodical, clearly a master of the craft. The space is bright and clean and cute. I met two other students that day who have been regulars, and they were very sweet and supportive. Bravo to Karu for creating such a wonderful community here in Madrid. Now, I wish I were staying longer!”
“I came in with absolutely no prior experience and didn’t really know what to expect, but Karu guided us so patiently and thoughtfully through the whole process. After just one class, we walked out with a beautiful little creation (a cosmetic bag!) that turned out perfectly, which honestly surprised me.
The atmosphere in the studio is calm, welcoming, and truly lovely, and it made the whole experience even more special. I ended up enjoying it so much that I completely fell in love with the process, and I’m already looking forward to coming back.
Highly recommend to anyone, even complete beginners!”

“I cannot recommend Karu’s classes more highly! I started as an absolute beginner—I had never touched a sewing machine before— and came to her class with a specific project I hoped to do in mind. She empowered me to feel like the project was possible and helped me make it happen in just a few weeks. She is such a good teacher; patient, kind, and generous. Her classes are very small (mine were all max four people), so you get the benefit of feeling like you’re in a private lesson with 1-on-1 attention while also getting to be with people and see each others’ projects and cheer each other on. I am leaving Madrid, and I am truly devastated that I won’t be able to keep taking classes with Karu (forever!). With that said, in just a month I learned so much from her. She gave me the confidence and skills to start learning to sew for the first time and now to keep sewing on my own. Thank you so much Karu, I truly feel like your classes changed my life!”
“I’ve loved my time at Studio Costura! Karu is the most amazing teacher. She is very communicative and takes her time to explain everything in much detail, support and help throughout the sewing process! I’ve definitely learned multiple things during my time with her, and I 100% suggest her, for anyone who’s interested in exploring the art of sewing”
“Karu is a talented, professional sewing instructor who teaches in Spanish and English. I took lessons from her this passed spring and have gained much needed confidence. She is a patient, creative, and clear teacher, combining her machine sewing skills and creativity to guide students through their projects. Karu is also a great resource for all things related to sewing - patterns, fabric, tools, shops, etc.”
“Genuinely could not recommend this place enough! Going in I was a bit nervous cause I had never touched a sewing machine before, but Karu was exceptionally helpful and patient during all three classes and explained everything untill I understood, making the whole experience comfortable and fun from the beginning. I’m going to miss it now that i’m leaving Madrid!”
