Well, well... I haven't blogged for a year. I hadn't forgotten I have a blog, of course not, but other forms of content have been more present. This place with a longer format content (therefore also a more time-consuming one), has taken a back seat compared to Instagram (and I also started doing stuff on YouTube). And it makes me very sad because this is really where what I share makes the most sense.

First I want to tell you that I'm so glad you're reading this. Maybe you've left the fast pace of Instagram to come here where there's no character limit (you'll notice it as I've gotten carried away, haha). Or maybe you've come via my newsletter and paused the rest in your inbox activity to see what I'm writing over here. Thank you, really. I'm glad to open the door for this space, swipe the dust and invite you to sit down for a virtual coffee with me while I write something probably too extensive in lenght (you are warned, lol). It's a monologue but if something resonates with you, you can obviously leave me a comment or write me an email, it's always nice to know there’s someone on the other side.

This text you are reading now was going to be the introduction to the post about my sewing projects during the vacations in Estonia. Although I didn't want to make a super long introduction about blogging etc., in the end I just got all tangled up and wrote this as if it was a letter to myself. And then I thought, hey, this should be here, on it's own and all. Well, not alone, accompanied by some nice images from Estonia that I'll add too. Here we go!

Bueno, bueno…llevo un año sin escribir el blog. No había olvidado que lo tengo, claro que no, pero otras formas de contenido han estado más presentes. Esto, que suele ser un formato más largo (por lo tanto también más costoso en términos de tiempo), ha estado cada vez más en el último lugar, después de Instagram (y también empecé a hacer cosas en YouTube). Y me da mucha pena porque realmente es aquí donde tiene más sentido lo que yo comparto.

Primero quiero decirte que me alegro mucho de que estés leyendo esto, será que has salido del ritmo rápido de Instagram para venir aquí donde no hay límite de caracteres (lo comprobarás ahora que me he dejado llevar, jaja). O igual has venido a través de mi newsletter y has pausado lo demás en tu bandeja de entrada para ver qué cuento por aquí. Gracias, de verdad, me alegro de abrir la puerta de este espacio, sacudir las alfombras e invitarte a que te sientas a tomar un café virtual conmigo mientras te doy un poco de chapa (estás avisada). A ver, es un monólogo pero si algo te resuena me puedes obviamente dejar un comentario o escribirme un mail, está genial saber que no hablas sola, jaja.

Este texto que lees ahora iba a ser la introducción del post sobre mis proyectos de costura durante las vacaciones en Estonia y aunque no quería hacer una introducción súper larga sobre el tema del blog etc, al final me lié y escribí esto como si fuera una carta para mí misma. Y luego pensé que oye, me gusta que esté aquí en el blog, así solo. Bueno, solo no, acompañado de unas imágenes bonitas de Estonia que te dejo también. Allá vamos.

To start with I have to say that lately I've been receiving more and more signs that I need to create more of this and less of the short term content on social media platforms like Instagram.

I've always been a big advocate of not publishing all the original content on platforms that aren't under your control (for various reasons such as you can lose it all overnight and then what?!) but lately I've also started to see clearer that my work and what I share... its place (in case if it will be only in one place) is not on Instagram.

This social media platform has been a great ally for my small business and thanks to it I've been able to reach (and will surely reach in the future) many new people who can discover my patterns and my personal projects (the hashtag system is great to share what we sew with specific patterns, I use it a lot, altough I think it’s also changing into “only populars first” direction). The work I’ve published there has fed me in a direct and indirect way and I'm grateful for it.

As a content creator, I've worked for them so that you would be happy spending time on their platform and while you browse through my projects (and millions of others created by so many other people), they add a couple of ads so they can cash in some good advertising money (among other things). And I, in the meantime, can promote my work for "free" and also earn a living (or at least try to do it).

It is clear that it is a business and nobody works for free to create that experience for you. Your time on the platform is very valuable for many companies... although you probably get little value from scrolling (an activity that is super addictive and benefits you very little in most cases).

Para empezar tengo que decir que últimamente he empezado a recibir más y más señales de que necesito crear más de esto y menos de lo superficial en redes sociales como Instagram.

Siempre he sido muy defensora de no meter todo el contenido original en las plataformas que ni siquiera son tuyas (por razones varias como por ejemplo que lo puedes perder todo de un día para otro y entonces qué?!) pero últimamente también tengo más claro que mi trabajo y lo que yo comparto…su lugar (en el caso de que tenga un único lugar donde habitar) no está en Instagram.

Esa red social ha sido un grandísimo aliado para mi proyecto y gracias a esa plataforma he podido llegar (y seguramente llegaré en el futuro) a mucha gente nueva que puede allí descubrir mis patrones y mis proyectos personales (está genial el sistema de hashtags para compartir lo que cosemos con los patrones concretos, lo uso mucho, aunque me parece que se está convirtiendo también en solo la opción de “los populares primero”). Vamos, que me ha dado de comer de una manera directa o indirecta y yo lo agradezco. Yo como creadora de contenido he trabajado para ellos para que tú estés a gusto en su plataforma y mientras ves mis proyectos te cuelan un par de anuncios y así ellos cobran el dinero que les paga la gente que quiere anunciarse allí (entre otras cosas). Y yo de paso, de manera “gratuita” promociono mi trabajo y también gano la vida (o por lo menos lo intento).

Está claro que todo esto es un negocio y nadie trabaja gratis para crearte esa experiencia. Tu tiempo en la plataforma es muy valioso para muchas empresas…aunque tú probablemente sacas poco valor para tu vida haciendo scroll (actividad que es super adictiva y aporta más bien poco en la mayoría de los casos).

Now of course, in our corner of that platform, in the sewing corner... friendships are made, knowledge is shared, inspiration is found! All of it is real and I have experienced it in my life. It is not just scrolling without thinking, it’s a real social network. So the whole experience, it does have good and bad things, that's for sure

So what am I saying, when I say I don't think it's the right place for my content? As always, there are many types of content, and indeed there is some part of my content that I don't think is getting enough use there compared to how much it costs to generate it. I'm talking about sewing tutorials (or anything else you want to learn) and long-form content with value beyond just entertainment, whether in photo, video, stories, reels etc. formats.

The time consumption is immense to generate this type of content giving added value (explanations, information, etc.) and on top of that, it is not even a good format for you to use, user experience wise. Let me explain: the very format of this network makes everything quick and short. And this in my opinion is the opposite of sewing (now, when you are going to see the next post about the things I sewed in a relatively short time you are going to say that I should not talk about speed anymore, hahahah). Tutorials need to be read, helpful information is not helpful (at least for me) if it’s presented in a form of a quick dance and I can’t pause and actually understand the meaning of it (no offence, haha).

Ahora sí, en nuestro rincón de esta plataforma, en el rincón de costura…se crean amistades, se comparten conocimientos, se inspira! Todo esto es real y lo he vivido, no es simplemente hacer scroll sin pensar, es una verdadera red social. Así que claro, tiene cosas buenas y malas (yo he empezado a pensar más sobre eso después de escuchar el podcast de Tamara Pazos y te lo recomiendo mucho).

Entonces qué estoy diciendo con que creo que no es el lugar adecuado para mi contenido? Como siempre, hay contenido de muchos tipos y efectivamente hay parte que creo que no se aprovecha allí tanto como lo que cuesta realmente generarlo. Hablo de tutoriales de costura (o de cualquier otra cosa que quieras aprender) y contenido de formato largo con valor más allá de solo entretenimiento, tanto en formato de foto, video, stories, reels etc.

El consumo de tiempo es inmenso para generar este tipo de contenido dando valor añadido (explicaciones, información etc) y encima ni siquiera es un formato bueno para que lo uses a gusto. Me explico: el propio formato de esa red hace que todo sea rápido y corto. Y esto en mi opinión es lo contrario de costura (ahora, cuando vas a ver el siguiente post de las cosas que cosí en relativamente poco tiempo, vas a decir que yo no hable más de la rapidez, jajaj).

Los tutoriales se tienen que leer, la información útil no es muy útil (por lo menos para mí) si no te da tiempo de pausar y entenderlo, ya que está presentado en formato de baile (lo digo sin juzgar, jaja).

Social media is a great format to discover new things, to find inspiration, to connect with people who sew all over the world and to share short format stuff...but longer content like tutorials or reviews of your sewing projects, I really don't think it's worth it sharing them there.

Of course, the social media environment gives you immediate rewards in the form of likes and reactions. And our brains love these pleasurable impulses. I like my work to be liked, and I can get that response instantly. So while I spend more time sharing short term content to get that positive feedback, you spend more time consuming the content without actually plugging in your sewing machine because suddenly you’ve engaged with another cat video. It’s a bit like a trap, am I right?

I won't leave Instagram (for the time being) and as I said, it's a great tool for many things...but I think I've spent too much time on it myself (both to seek the pleasure of recieving “rewards” and also because of FOMO, for fear of not selling my products, therefore not being able to provide for myself and my family etc). In the meantime I left this, which I consider my home in the online world, unattended. And it's sad because every time I need to share some educational content with a student, I come here to look for it, instead of going to Instagram.

Redes sociales son un formato ideal para descubrir nuevas cosas, para encontrar inspiración, para conectar con gente que cose en todo el mundo y para compartir cosas de formato corto…pero contenido más largo como tutoriales o reseñas de tus proyectos de costura, de verdad creo que no merece la pena subirlas allí.

Eso sí, el entorno de esta red te da recompensas inmediatas a través de “me gustas” y reacciones. Y a nuestros cerebros les encantan estos impulsos placenteros. Me gusta que mi trabajo guste, y allí me lo hacen saber enseguida. Así que mientras yo paso más rato compartiendo para recibir ese feedback positivo, tú pasas más rato consumiendo el contenido sin llegar a realmente enchufar tu máquina de coser porque te ha salido otro video de gatos y lo vas a pasar a un amigo. Es un poco trampa, no?

No saldré de Instagram (por el momento) y como he dicho, es una herramienta genial para muchas cosas…pero creo que yo misma le he dedicado demasiado tiempo (para buscar el placer de la recompensa y también por el miedo de no estar al día, de no vender, por lo tanto de no poder manetnerme a mí y a mi familia etc). Mientras tanto dejé esto, que lo considero mi casa en el mundo online, sin atención y es muy triste porque cada vez que necesito compartir algo de contenido educativo con algún alumno, vengo a buscarlo aquí y mucho menos a Instagram.

And that's why I want to get back to the blog. It's a space where I can't post every day for obvious reasons (right now I'm not going to make up timelines that I know I won't be able to follow), but I know that in the long run, this is the place both for the content related to my lingerie patterns and to my personal projects. Here I can make it easy for you to find and use all of it for your sewing practice too (that's why I'll be rearranging my website over the next few months like someone who does a wardrobe deep cleaning after five years, haha).

I have a lot of posts pending and not enough time but I want to write about the new direction of my company after leaving the regular sewing classes in Historias Hiladas and how I start this 2023/24 school year with new horizons, better mental health and much anticipated freedom in my career that I have worked so hard to achieve. I haven't talked at all about how my business has changed since I brought the online shop back to Madrid in November, after all these years of my mother shipping your orders from Estonia. Or how I had a total burnout in my work as a teacher in in-person classes and how this made me rethink how I work. And that during the month of July I had a real holiday for the first time since I started Studio Costura. I’m also working on Laola Patterns again and there’s an in person event I’m starting to envision and it’s not related to my lingerie courses. A few things on my mind, haha.

Y por eso, quiero volver al blog. Es un espacio donde no puedo publicar a diario por motivos obvios (ahora mismo no voy a inventar plazos de tiempos que ya sé que no podré seguir), pero sé que a la larga, éste es el sitio tanto de contenido relacionado con mis patrones de lencería como de mis proyectos personales. Aquí puedo hacer que los puedas encontrar y usar con facilidad para aprovechar esa información para tus proyectos de costura (para eso estaré reordenando mi página durante los próximos meses como quien hace una limpieza de armario a fondo después de cinco años, jaja).

Tengo muchas entradas pendientes y no tengo suficiente tiempo pero quiero escribir sobre el nuevo rumbo de mi empresa después de dejar de dar las clases continuas en Historias Hiladas y cómo empiezo este curso 2023/24 con nuevos horizontes, mejor salud mental y la deseada libertad laboral que tanto me ha costado conseguir. No he hablado nada de cómo ha cambiado mi proyecto desde que traje la tienda online de vuelta a Madrid en noviembre, después de todos estos años que los envíos los hacía mi madre desde Estonia. O de que me quemé muchísimo de mi trabajo en diferentes formas de clases y cursos con gente y cómo esto me hizo replantear lo que hago. Y que en este mes de julio he tenido unas vacaciones de verdad por primera vez desde que empecé a Studio Costura. También estoy trabajando de nuevo con los proyectos de Laola Patterns y empiezo a planear algo presencial que no tiene que ver con mis cursos de lencería. Unas cuantas cosas tengo en mente, jaja.

The other day I listened to a podcast where they talked about Instagram saying that it was like a good old family photo album (only that it’s in a digital format and some people share it publicly). When we curate a beautiful photo album of our family photos, we usually don’t put sad pictures in that album, as these albums (physical or digital) are there to expose the happy moments of our lives, the special moments we want to remember. And wow, I think it's something beautiful!

I think that where we've got carried away a bit, is when we browse through these albums thinking that people's lives (or their hobbies, or whatever the topic is that they share there) are always this happy and beautiful. And therefore we can feel bad because we do know that our real lives are not so “happy” all the time. There are some nice moments, some very hard moments and a lot of gray stuff in between. The same goes for the cat videos I love...my two ordinary (and real) cats do funny things at most around 2% of the time. But I don't love them any less for that, haha.

You see, I didn't want to write a philosophical rant nor do I want to go to live in the countryside without wifi and to throw my cell phone in the trash. But I see that I waste a lot of time that I could spend doing things that really fulfill me (or challenge me when I have to unpick again and again, haha). And I also see that the content that I prepare with so much love (and time, a lot of time) needs a better home to live in. So I'm writing this post for myself...and a little bit for you, in case these thoughts cross your mind too. I really hope that I can manage to train my awareness about my own free time (and my working time, too).

And that's the end of my rambling. I hope you like them as much as I do, I had fun looking up the names both in English and Spanish as I didn’t know many of them.)

El otro día escuché en un podcast donde hablaban de Instagram y decían que era como el álbum de fotos de toda la vida, solo que digital y algunas personas lo tenían público. Que igual que en los álbumes de fotos de toda la vida, lo común es no compartir las penas, son álbumes (físicos o digitales) para exponer los momentos felices de nuestras vidas, los momentos especiales que queremos recordar. Y vaya, pienso que es algo muy bonito!

Creo que donde se nos ha ido un poco el tema, es cuando nos navegamos entre estos álbumes pensando que las vidas de la gente (o sus hobbies, o lo que sea que comparten) son así de felices y bonitos siempre. Y por lo tanto podemos sentirnos mal porque sí que tenemos constancia que nuestras vidas reales no son tan “happy flower” todo el tiempo. Hay momentos bonitos, otros muy duros y mucha cosa gris en el medio. Lo mismo pasa con los videos de gatos que me flipan…mis dos gatos ordinarios (y reales) hacen cosas graciosas como mucho en el 2% del tiempo. Pero por eso no les quiero menos, jaja.

Mira, no quería escribir una parrafada filosófica ni quiero ir a vivir en el campo sin wifi y tirar el móvil a la basura. Pero veo que pierdo mucho tiempo que podría estar haciendo cosas que realmente me llenan (o me retan cuando toca descoser una y otra vez, jaja) y también veo que el contenido que con tanto cariño (y tiempo, mucho tiempo) os preparo, necesita una casa más digna para vivir. Así que esta entrada la escribo para mí misma…y un poco para ti, por si a ti también te pasan estos pensamientos por la cabeza. Nada es solo blanco y negro (aparte de un buen estampado vichy de estos que tanto me gustan, jaja), pero un poco más de conciencia del valor de nuestro tiempo libre…eso sí que lo pido para mí por lo menos.

Y termino la parrafada. “Nos vemos” tanto en Instagram como por aquí y que sepas que me hace muy pero muy feliz que vengas a este blog y dedicas un rato de tu valioso tiempo para ponerte al día con lo que yo comparto. La siguiente entrada es de mis costuras de verano, te veo allí!

If you have been following this blog for a longer time, you might know that first I wrote only in Spanish, then in English and Spanish and finally I switched to English because it was too time consuming (and well, then to nothing, as you can see, oops). Thanks to AI tools I can write the blog in both languages again, yay. First I write it, then I run it through a translator program and then I proofread it. It still takes a long time but I think it's worth it, let me know!

Si sigues a este blog desde hace mil, sabrás que primero escribí solo en castellano, luego en inglés y castellano y al final me pasé a inglés que no me daba más la vida (y luego a nada, como se ha podido observar, ups). Gracias a las herramientas de inteligencia artificial vuelvo a escribir el blog en ambos idiomas, yujuu. Primero lo escribo, luego lo paso por el traductor y luego lo reviso. Aún así tardo mucho pero creo que merece la pena, ¡ya me cuentas!
