There’s one thing that “happens” every summer here in Madrid…it’s really hot, haha. Here’s a recopilation of my personal sewing projects from this summer that have all been influenced by the extreme heat.
Hay una cosa que “ocurre” cada verano aquí en Madrid…hace un calor que flipas, jaja. Aquí va una recopilación de mis proyectos personales de costura de este verano, todos ellos inspirados directamente del calorazo.
gingham swimsuit // bañador de vichy
I needed a new swimsuit for this summer as the ones from the last summers don't fit me anymore so I decided to do a little Hanna bikini swimsuit hack (I was just finishing filming the online course).
My initial idea was to make a swimsuit with Hanna cups but removing the cup seam and transfering the dart as a gather for the cup side (there's a tutorial here on the blog about how to hack this bikini pattern into a swimsuit). I also made it into a wrap/crossed cups style (not sure how to describe that in English, lol).
I first made a muslin with the lilac/pink swim lycra remnants and liked it but when I finished the gingham version there was something off. So I decided to change the cup shape and now I like it way better. It was definitely worth all the slow zig-zag unpicking.
Necesitaba un bañador nuevo para este verano porque los de los últimos veranos ya no me valen de talla, así que decidí hacer un pequeño hack de un bikini Hanna (estaba terminando de grabar el curso online de bikinis así que iba todo en esa onda ).
Mi idea inicial era hacer un bañador con copas Hanna pero quitando la costura princesa de la copa y transfiriendo la pinza como fruncido para el lateral de la copa (tengo el tutorial sobre cómo cambiar este patrón de bikini para convertirlo en bañador). También lo convertí en un estilo cruzado.
Primero hice una prueba con los retales de lycra de baño lila/rosa y me gustó, pero cuando terminé la versión de vichy había algo que no encajaba del todo a lo que había tenido en mente. Así que decidí cambiar la forma de la copa y ahora me gusta mucho más. Definitivamente valió la pena todo el proceso lento de descoser el zig-zag.
I've been wearing it a lot this summer and I'm so happy that I can actually have a swimsuit that's not small or weird fitting. My waist is in a bigger size than my hips so when I draft a swimsuit I almost always use a straight side seam instead of fitted waist shaping.
This is definitely one of my all time fav makes as it has made me feel way better in beach/pool situations where I usually don't feel as secure as I'd like to. So yeah, yay for these handmade clothes that elevate your self esteem.
Lo he llevado mucho este verano y estoy muy contenta de poder tener un bañador que no me quede pequeño o que quede en general raro. Mi talla de cintura es más grande que de mi cadera, así que cuando hago el patrón de bañador para mí, casi siempre hago el costado recto en lugar de una cintura con entalle y ajustada.
Es definitivamente uno de mis proyectos favoritos de todos los tiempos, ya que me ha hecho sentir mucho mejor en situaciones de playa / piscina donde por lo general no me siento tan cómoda como me gustaría. Así que sí, un brindis por estas prendas hechas a mano que elevan tu autoestima.
beach coverup // “un algo” para poner encima del bañador
I made this thing to wear as a cover up at the beach and it turned out really cute and totally wearable for other occasions too. I didn't even plan it but there's some sweet pattern matching on the fronts, that's a sewing nerd win there.
Hice esta prenda (chaquetilla?) para usar como algo de ponerme encima en la playa o piscina cuando tienes que ir al baño o al bar o lo que sea y el resultado ha quedado muy mono y totalmente usable para otras ocasiones también. Ni siquiera lo había planeado, pero el estampado me ha cuadrado bastante guay en las piezas delanteras.
The pattern I used is a hack of the Dressing Robe pattern by Helen's Closet. I took away the wrap portion of the front bodice, omitted the front bands and finished the front with a bias tape. I also left long slits on the sides. I've used this pattern lots of times before, both for me and to make gifts (all my past versions are in this post)
El patrón que utilicé es una adaptación del patrón Dressing Robe de Helen's Closet. Quité la parte de cruce en el delantero, omití las bandas delanteras y rematé la parte delantera con cinta de bies. También dejé aberturas largas a los laterales. He utilizado este patrón muchas veces, tanto para mí como para hacer regalos (todas mis versiones anteriores están en esta entrada).
The fabric was a random poly remnant that was perfect as it does not wrinkle and I have been able to take this coverup with me to all my summer travels!
La tela fue un retal de poliester que encontré en Retales Meco y ya que no se arruga anda, ha sido muy fácil de llevarlo a todas partes conmigo.
homewear dress // la batica
There are some garments that you only need in certain climates in certain situations...and this is one of them. It gets super hot in Madrid during the summer and you really can wear only very light weight garments if you're not putting heavy AC on. I work from home and one option is to wear your old t-shirt and some shorts...but I prefer having something that makes me feel a bit more dressed (I'm not a working in PJs type of person...), but still feel comfortable. Enter the “homewear dress”, lol.
Hay algunas prendas que sólo necesitas en ciertos climas y en ciertas situaciones... y ésta es una de ellas. En Madrid hace un calorazo durante el verano y realmente solo puedes llevar prendas muy ligeras si no vas a estar todo el día con el aire a tope. Yo trabajo desde casa y una opción es llevar la típica camiseta vieja y unos pantalones cortos... pero prefiero tener algo que me haga sentir un poco más “vestida” (no soy de las que trabajan en pijama...), pero sin dejar de sentirme cómoda. Y por eso, el concepto de “la batica”, jaja.
In the past I've sewn a couple of Ogden cami dress hacks (adding a 140 cm wide ruffled panel as a skirt to a shortened Ogden bodice) using light weight viscose prints to have super light weight summer dresses for wearing at home. These have worked out great and I wanted to replace one that's going to be retired because of heavy wear.
I have to say that a priori it's not the most motivating garment to sew: a dress for homewear "that no one will see" (and yes, I know that this one could be worn outside but I don't really see myself in this dress outside of my home...but this is just a personal matter). But the thing is that these type of garments are the ones I actually wear the most as I am wearing one of these every day. So making something that I enjoy wearing + I find cute and it's also something that gets a lot of wear...it's totally a win-win.
En el pasado he cosido un par de vestidos modificando el patrón de Ogden cami (añadiendo un ancho de tela típico de 140 cm fruncido en la parte superior como falda a un top de Ogden cortito) utilizando estampados de viscosa ligera para tener vestidos de verano súper fresquitos para llevar en casa. Me han funcionado muy bien y quería sustituir uno que se va a jubilar por mucho uso.
He de decir que a priori no es la prenda que más me motiva coser: un vestido para estar por casa “que nadie va a ver” (y sí, ya sé que este se podría llevar fuera pero realmente no me veo con este vestido fuera de casa...pero esto es sólo una cuestión personal). Pero el caso es que este tipo de prendas son las que realmente más me pongo ya que todos los días llevo algo así por lo cómodas que son. Así que hacer algo que me guste llevar, que me parezca bonito y que, además, lo lleve mucho... es todo un acierto.
For this version I lenghtened the Ogden base (I think around 60-70 cm), cut the front in two pieces (previously adding an overlap and a placket facing) and I also made the back neckline straight. I really like how it turned out and I should definitely make a couple more because these type of dresses is something I wear here from May to September.
I love the slight granny vibe on this print too!!
Para esta versión he alargado la base de Ogden (creo que unos 60-70 cm), he cortado la parte delantera en dos piezas (añadiendo previamenteun cruce y una vista para la tapeta de los botones) y también he hecho recto el escote de la espalda. Me gusta mucho como ha quedado y definitivamente debería hacer un par de ellos más porque este tipo de vestidos es algo que llevo aquí de mayo a septiembre.
Además, me encanta la onda abuela que tiene este estampado, jaja
summer PJs // pijama de verano
This one is another summer project that was not super exciting to plan but I'm very glad I made this set as I'm wearing it a lot.
I initially got this cute double gauze with an idea to make a top but then I reconsidered and thought I'd wear it more as PJs. I used the Ogden cami as a base but then freehanded from there using bias tape for the finishings and straps.
For the shorts I used a basic shorts pattern I once used for PJs from Ottobre Design but I can't remember the exact number/pattern anymore.
Este es otro proyecto de verano que no fue muy emocionante de planificar, pero estoy muy contenta de haber hecho este conjunto, ya que lo estoy usando mucho.
Inicialmente compré esta bonita doble gasa con la idea de hacer un top, pero luego lo pensé bien y decidí que lo usaría más como pijama. Utilicé el mismo patrón de Ogden como base pero luego seguí a lo libre utilizando cinta al bies para los acabados y los tirantes. Para el pantalón utilicé un patrón básico de pantalón que ya había usado una vez para pijamas de Ottobre Design pero ya no recuerdo el número/patrón exacto.
From now on I’ll also upload my projects to Threadloop, a page where you can share your sewing projects in a super quick and easy way (if you knit and are familiar about Raverly, it’s like that page but for sewing…and way better looking, lol).
It also works as a pattern data base: you can search through tons of pattern using filters to help you with planning your projects. I uploaded these four projects and I have to say that it’s super easy to use, fast and super functional. I see it as the future meeting place for the online sewing community now that Instagram is almost not working for that anymore. I really hope this community grows as it will be beneficial to all of us.
The page is currently on beta mode so you have to sign up for the access through a form first. Once you get the access you can start discovering everything this project has to offer, either in a free mode or as a paid member. I did pay for my membership right away as I hope that this project will expand and grow and well…people need money for making that happen. A partir de ahora estoy subiendo mis proyectos también a Threadloop que es una página muy guay creado para compartir los proyectos de costura de una manera fácil y rápido y además sirve como un buscador de patrones de costura con una base de datos increíble (si tejes y conoces a Raverly, pues es algo así pero para coser…y es mucho más bonito, jaja).
También funciona como una base de datos de patrones: puedes buscar entre muchísimos patrones usando filtros para ayudarte con la planificación de tus proyectos. Yo subí estos cuatro proyectos y tengo que decir que es súper fácil de usar, rápido y súper funcional. Lo veo como el futuro punto de encuentro de la comunidad de costura online ahora que Instagram ya casi no sirve para eso. De verdad espero que esta comunidad crezca ya que será beneficioso para todos nosotros.
La página está actualmente en modo beta por lo que primero tienes que registrarte para obtener el acceso a través de un formulario. Una vez que tengas el acceso podrás empezar a descubrir todo lo que este proyecto tiene que ofrecer, ya sea en modo gratuito o como miembro de pago.
