This has been long overdue, but here we go with my list of fabric shops for Barcelona, Spain. If you're planning to visit Barcelona, you're in luck because there are so many fabric shops to discover! You're also fortunate because the city is so beautiful that you'll probably want to stay forever. Oh well, at least that's what happened to me when I first came to Spain many years ago, haha. Now I live in Madrid, but I must admit that I'll always miss living in Barcelona, which is why I try to organize sewing courses there so I have a good excuse to visit the city regularly.

Let's dive in, and I'll tell you about my favorite places to shop for fabric in this city. There are various options for all kinds of budgets. I'll curate my list here by location so you can check out places that are close by. You can also directly check out my Google map with all the spots here.

Llevo un buen rato que quería escribir esta entrada y por fin está lista: aquí van mis sitios favoritos de comprar telas en Barcelona. Si viajas a Barcelona tienes mucha suerte porque aparte de ser una ciudad muy bonita, también tienes muchos sitios para ir a ver (y comprar!) telas.

Para mí es un lugar que te enamora enseguida y quieres quedarte allí a vivir. Bueno, es lo que me pasó a mí hace muchos años cuando llegué a España, jaja. Y aunque después me vine ya a Madrid, siempre quiero volver y también por eso organizo los cursos allí para poder visitar a menudo y disfrutar de estar allí.

Vamos allá, te contaré de los sitios que más me han gustado y pienso que te podría gustar visitar. No son todas las tiendas porque hay muchas pero son las que me parecen más interesantes. Tienes muchas opciones para bolsillos diferentes ya que hay precios para todos los públicos. He hecho mi lista basándome en zonas así que puedes visitar varias cosas juntas si vas allí. También puedes directamente verlo todo en mi mapa de Google.

There are many different fabric shops in the center of Barcelona, around the Urquinaona metro station, so let's start there.

My favorite spot there is Nunoya. This small fabric shop used to be standalone, but now it's located together with another well-established fabric shop called Julián López. Nunoya has a good variety of Japanese prints and brands like Nani Iro or Kokka Fabrics. They also sell fabrics from Atelier Brunette and Dashwood Studio. It's a visually pleasing experience, and it's very hard to resist buying a good designer print there. The prices are high but as expected for imported fabrics.

Julián López is the shop that shares the same location with Nunoya. They have all kinds of fabrics, but they are mostly known for more expensive dressmaking fabrics, and they also carry Liberty prints.

Tejidos Donna and La Casa del Retall are two shops by the same company that carry quite affordable fabrics in a good variety. In their main store Tejidos Donna, you can find a variety of basic dressmaking and other woven fabrics, and La Casa del Retall always has interesting knit fabrics ranging from jersey knits to textured sweater knits.

Just next to these shops, there's Ribes & Casals, which is a big shop that carries all kinds of fabrics at a medium price point. This shop is very famous in Spain, but I'm not a big fan because I think they should source better fabrics in a bigger variety, haha. Maybe it's because it's one of the few shops in Madrid, and I think they could have a way wider offer (and therefore we would have decent fabrics to buy in Madrid, an option which we don't have really right now, haha). But you can for sure find something there!

Close to these shops, there's a well-known haberdashery called Santa Ana, which has a very good selection of everything you need to complete your sewing project.

Around the same area, close to Arc de Triomf, there's a small remnant shop called Hiper Retal, which can be a place where you'll find your next best fabric or you'll be super confused about the mess they have there, haha.

En el pleno centro, en la zona de Urquinaona hay una variedad de tiendas así que empezamos allí.

Mi sitio favorito es la Nunoya. Esa tienda que antes tenía su propio local, ahora está en un mismo edificio con otra tienda muy conocida que se llama Julián López. En Nunoya hay buena variedad de estampados japoneses y marcas como Nani Iro y Kokka Fabrics. También tienen selección de marcas como Atelier Brunette y Dashwood Studio. Es una experience visual muy grata y cuesta mucho no comprar un buen estampado de diseño allí. Los precios son altos pero es algo de esperar con esas telas importadas.

Julián López es la tienda que está al lado y tienen muchos tipos de telas pero son más conocidos por telas más caras para ocasiones de fiesta. También tienen muchos estampados de Liberty.

Tejidos Donna y La Casa del Retall son dos tiendas de la misma familia que tienen bastantes cosas interesantes y a buen precio. La tienda principal Tejidos Donna tiene telas para prendas de vestir y demás telas planas y en La Casa del Retall tienes muchas telas de punto interesantes desde tipo camiseta a tipo jersey con texturas.

Justo al lado está Ribes & Casals que es una tienda grande que lleva todo tipo de telas a precios bastante razonables. La tienda es muy famosa en España pero yo personalmente no soy muy fan porque pienso que deberían traer telas mejores y más variedad, jaja. Será porque es una de las pocas opciones que tenemos en Madrid y nunca tienen nada que buscas, con que se mejoren un poquiiiito no estaría mal, jaja. Pero bueno, algo siempre se encuentra allí.

Cerca de esas tiendas está la conocida mercería Santa Ana que tiene muy buena selección de todo tipo de artículos que necesitas para completar tus proyectos de costura.

En esa zona también está una tienda pequeña de retales que se llama Hiper Retal, muy cerca de Arc de Triomf. Es posible que allí encuentres la tela de tus sueños o que solo te quedas abrumada del lío que tienen montado allí, jaja.

If you get hungry around this area, I have to say that I ate a very nice cinnamon roll the other day at Demasié. Well, I think there was a cinnamon roll under the blanket of all the topping action there, haha.

Si te entra hambre por allí, tengo que decir que el otro día me comí un buen rollo de canela en Demasié que está al lado. Bueno, había allí un rollo de canela debajo de toda la mandanga que llevaba encima, creo, jaja.

Another area is close to Torre Glòries, where you'll find the famous Mercat dels Encants. This flea market is a place to be if you're into going through rolls of random fabrics in hopes of finding cheap deals. The experience is immersive as there are all kinds of stuff being sold there, and it can be very crowded depending on the time of day you visit. If you look like a tourist (I do!), take care to keep an eye on your belongings while you're going crazy with all the fabric options (both there and in general when visiting crowded places in Barcelona).

There are dozens of fabric booths that mainly sell deadstock fabrics, and you can find some sweet deals, but you need to know what you're looking for. There are also many booths that have vintage haberdashery items like trims and buttons.

Otra zona está por Torre Glòries, donde está el famoso mercadillo Mercat dels Encants. Si te gusta rebuscar entre muchos rollos de telas diversas, es tu sitio para encontrar la mejor oferta. La experiencia de Encants es inmersiva por todo lo que puedes ver y comprar allí y puede ser que según el día y hora que vayas esté muy lleno de gente. Si pareces a turista (como yo!), hay que estar muy pendiente de tu bolso mientras estás metida en el mundo de telas allí (bueno, allí y en Barcelona en general).

Tienes decenas de puestos de telas que venden restos de stock y puedes encontrar cosas guays si sabes buscar. También hay muchos puestos que tienen cosas de mercería como botones vintage o cintas varias.

The prices are usually very cheap, but you need to have some experience in fabric shopping because otherwise, you can end up buying a bad quality fabric. I mean, you won't lose tons of money, but in my opinion, our time when sewing is so valuable that I don't want to waste it on using fabrics that will look or feel odd after the first wash. But I guess this is a topic for another post, haha.

The market is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Los precios suelen ser muy baratos pero tienes que tener algo de experiencia de comprar telas para no acabar con telas de muy mala calidad porque hay de todo. No es que pierdas mucho dinero pero en mi opinión el tiempo que usamos para coser es tan valioso que no merece la pena usarlo para coser con telas que se deforman al primer lavado o uso. Pero supongo que eso es un tema para otra entrada, jeje.

El mercado abre los lunes, los miércoles, los viernes y los sábados.

Stocktextiles is a remnant shop that is very close to the market, so if you have time, you should definitely pass by. This is one of my go-to spots because they have an amazing variety of deadstock fabrics, and I've found really interesting textures and colors there. The shop is filled with fabric rolls, some of which have the composition written on their tag, some of them don't have any information. It can definitely be an overwhelming experience if you're unsure about what you're looking for, haha. The prices are higher than in Encants.

I don't have a good reference for sweets or ice cream in that specific area, to be honest, haha. If someone does, let me know, it’s important!

Stocktextiles es una tienda de telas que está muy cerca del mercadillo así que si tienes tiempo, deberías visitarlo seguramente. Es uno de mis sitios fijos donde siempre voy porque tienen muy buena variedad de restos de stock de moda y eh encontrado telas muy guays y texturas especiales allí. La tienda está llena de rollos de telas apilados unos encima de otros, algunos con sus etiquetas de composición, muchos otros sin ellas. Puede ser otra experiencia de colapso por si no tienes ni idea para qué quieres la tela, jaja. Las telas son más caras que en Encants.

Por desgracia no tengo en esa zona justo una referencia de helado o dulces, jaja. Si alguien lo tiene, avisadme que es importante!

In Gracia area, you can find a small and adorable fabric shop called Mina Mina. They sell a good variety of prints on quilting cotton and canvas, and there are also different knits. The shop is full of sweet little finds, and I also really like the bags and accessories from their local production + the outlet by the brand Two Thirds that located at the back part of the shop. This shop has both more expensive fabrics and also cute prints at a medium price point.

En el barrio de Gracia puedes encontrar una tienda muy mona en la plaza de la Virreina que se llama Mina Mina. Venden una buena variedad de estampados tanto en telas tipo patchwork como lonetas y también tienen interesantes puntos. La tienda está llena de cosas cuquis y también me gustan mucho los bolsos que venden de su producción local (no he conseguido identificar del todo bien si es la misma gente de la tienda? pero cada vez que veo los bolsos y que venden la tela similar, digo que me hago uno, jaja) + el outlet de la marca Two Thirds que tienen en la parte trasera de la tienda. Esta tienda tiene tanto telas más caras como estampados monos a precios medios.

Lalanalú is another cute shop nearby for yarn lovers. The place is beautiful, and the brands they carry are top level!

Another fabric shop that I haven't visited, but many people have been telling me about it, is Gratacós, which sells more higher-end dressmaking fabrics.

In Gracia, you can find an ice-cream and a pastry shop on every plaza, so it's not very difficult to get your sugar in, haha. I would still recommend Cloud and Selvatica for ice cream and Flor de Gracia for pastries.

Lalanalú es una tienda de lanas que está muy cerca y me parece preciosa! Las marcas que traen son de alta calidad y el sitio en sí me parece muy bonito. Les vi con clases de tejer en la parte de atrás de la tienda, en su patio con cactus y me pareció muy guay.

Otra tienda de telas que no he visitado personalmente pero que está allí en la zona es Gratacós. Varias personas me lo han mencionado, venden telas más caras para prendas de vestir.

En Gracia no te vas a quedar sin tu dosis de azúcar porque tienes una heladería y una pastelería en cada plaza. Yo recomendaría Cloud y Selvática para helados y Flor de Gracia para unos buenos bollos.

Around the Urgell metro area, there are other two interesting shops. Teixits i Retalls is a remnant shop that is quite small, but I have bought a lot of fabrics there. Super cheap prices, and you can find some really nice pieces there if you're lucky.

And nearby, you also have Sewpatch, which is a sewing machine shop and a haberdashery. They have a big variety of all types of sewing-related stuff like cutting tools, pins, marking tools, etc. The best part is that they sell quality sewing thread for a really good price so I'd definitely buy the 1000m Gutermann Mara or Ora bobbins there if you have a chance.

When walking from one place to another, you can find L'Atelier where you can get some nice croissants filled with different sweet stuff.

Alrededor del metro Urgell tienes otras dos tiendas interesantes. Teixits i Retalls es una tienda de retales que es pequeñita pero yo he comprado muchas telas allí. Los precios son muy baratos y si estás de suerte cuando vayas, puedes encontrar telas muy buenas.

Cerca de allí tienes también a Sewpatch que es una tienda de máquinas de coser y mercería. Tienen un montón de herramientas para costura desde tijeras hasta los alfileres. La mejor parte es que venden los hilos de coser a muy buen precio así que las bobinas de 1000m de Mara de Gutermann o las de Ora las puedes comprar allí y vas a ahorrar mucho.

Mientras caminas de un sitio al otro te queda en el medio L’Atelier donde puedes comer un buen croissant lleno de cosas ricas.
